Clarence Country Arrowood

Clarence “Country” Arrowood, 86, of Greenup, KY went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 18, 2016 at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Arrowood was born on January 14, 1930 and raised in Johnson County, KY, a son of the late Melvin and Etta McKenzie Arrowood.  He was also preceded in death by his brothers: Walter, Hansel, Lawrence, Douglas, John Troy and James Harold Arrowood; three sisters: Elsie Ward, Mary Preston, and Naomi Hager; and a grandson, Jason Bradley Arrowood. Clarence was a US Army veteran with the 109th Transportation Co., where he served in the Korean War.  He was awarded several metals and received an honorable discharge. Before being drafted into the Army, he was employed by the Coca-Cola Bottle Company in Louisa, KY. After returning from the military, he attended the Mayo Vocational School, where he received his certification as a welder.  He was employed by Hinkle Contracting Corp., George Tom Williams Company; Allied Chemical Semet Solvay Coke Plant, and retired from AK Steel Coke Plant as a maintenance leader and welder after 36 years of service, where he was known by “Argo.” He was a member and helped established the Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #350 of Ashland, KY, member of the Ironton Moose Lodge #701, past Kentucky State Commander and District Commander of VFW post #1169 in Ashland, a life member of the Ironton V.F.W. post 8850, a former trustee for the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Ashland, member of American Legion post 76 in Ashland, KY, an honorary member of the military order of the cooties, the DAV, Commanders Club Bronze Leader, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the former Auxiliary Paintsville Police, an avid gun collector and a member of the American Rifle Association. He was a pitcher for the Paintsville Baseball Team, where he held a record for pitching 23 strikeouts in a game. He was also a pitcher for the Semet Solvay fast pitch softball team. He was a faithful and loyal donor for multiple charities, especially ones for veterans, children, and the Kentucky State Police. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality, story telling, jokes and witty character, but above all the love for his family and accepting the Lord as his Savior. He was of the Baptist Faith. He will be sadly missed by his family that he enjoyed spending time with. He is survived by his son: Billy Ray Arrowood and his wife Robin of Cynthiana, KY; a daughter, Connie Lynn Arrowood of Flatwoods, KY that resided with and cared for during his long illness until his passing.  He is also survived by two grandchildren: Todd Wesley Arrowood and his wife Sandy Carper Arrowood, and Christina Lynne Withers; four grandchildren: Hunter Bradley Arrowood, Autumn Grace Arrowood, Shelby Lynne Withers, and Chelsea Ann Withers.  He is also survived by a special friend and caregiver, Raymond Black of Greenup, KY and several special nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 1 pm on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods, KY with Minister J. R. Gullett officiating.  Entombment will follow at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, KY. The pallbearers for Mr. Arrowood will be Billy Ray Arrowood, Todd Wesley Arrowood, Hunter Bradley Arrowood, Raymond Black, Danny Ward, and Johnny Hager.  Military Rites will be performed by the US Army Honor Guard and the Greenbo Detachment of the Marine Corps League.
