Clinton Marvin Shields, 76, of Flatwoods, KY, passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, KY from complications of an emergency abdominal surgery. Clinton was born March 15, 1942, in Fairbanks, Alaska, to the late Murray W. and Helen Brock Shields. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his half-brothers, William Gerald Shields and Richard Howard Shields. He moved to Gainesville, Florida in 1946 along with his family. He graduated from Gainesville High School in 1959 and entered the University of Florida. In December 1962, he received a BSBA degree with a major in Industrial Relations. Shortly thereafter, he received a mission call to the Brazilian South Mission. Two and one-half years later he came home and entered Graduate School at University of Florida. In April 1967, he received an MBA degree with a Management major. He accepted a job with Armco Steel Co. in Ashland, Kentucky, in the Industrial Engineering Department. May 1968, he transferred to the Industrial Relations Department and spent the next twenty-nine years involved in contract administration. This involved contract interpretation, grievance procedure (including arbitration), negotiations at the local plant level, company level, and industry level, and of course, advising all levels of plant and department management on contract administration and interpretation. On his first Sunday in Ashland, he met Janet Sheffield. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple four years later on June 16, 1971. They were blessed with two children. Steven Lee and Katherine Lynn. He served in the first Ashland Branch/Ward Bishopric as a counselor in 1969-1972, four years in the Huntington, W.V. Stake Presidency, and Bishop in the Ashland Ward 1986-1992. He served on the Stake High Council four times. He was Stake Mission President for two years. Additionally, he had served in every ward auxiliary except for Relief Society and Young Women (he conducted the Singing Mothers’ chorus in Relief Society on one occasion in Gainesville, FL). Clinton enjoyed sports, he was a Florida Gator fanatic, he loved music, and reading and working crosswords, he kept himself busy since his retirement in 1997, with church callings, helping to take care of his father-in-law, and neighbors, and his activities as a longtime member of the Greenup County Kiwanis club. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Janet Sheffield Shields of Flatwoods, KY; one son, Steven Lee Shields of Flatwoods, KY; one daughter, Katherine (Logan) Shields Haynes of Middletown, OH; three brothers, H. Gordon (Sharon R.) Shields of Mesa, Arizona, M. Lamar (Sharon O.) Shields of Springfield, VA, and Dr. Roger E. (Diann) Shields of Gotha, Florida; and a host of extended family and friends. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Doctors & Staff at OLBH; Dr. Kazee, Dr. Timothy Jones, Dr. Nestor, Dr. Ehrie, Dr. Defade, Dr. Egel and the other doctors, nurses and aides who did the best they could with the situation. Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1001 Kenwood Drive, Russell, KY) with Bishop Benjamin Hurt presiding. Burial will follow at Brick Union Cemetery in Lloyd, KY. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 21, 2018, at Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods, KY.
