Gene Wells, 79, of Russell, KY passed away on Monday, July 10, 2017 at Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, KY.
Mr. Wells was born November 10, 1937 in Portsmouth, OH; a son of the late Charlie and Geneva Honaker Wells. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brother, David D. Wells and one grandson, Austin James "AJ" Wells.
He was a 1955 C/O Clerk/Engineer, BLE 271 Brotherhood of Local Engineers, Air Break Supervisor, Former Greenup County Bailiff, President of Russell Lions Club, Fireman for the Russell Fire Department, Youngest Fire Chief in the state of KY in 1956, President of Civic League, KY Colonel, Member of the Elks, US Army Veteran stationed in Fort Knox, KY, Member and Trustee at Meade Memorial Methodist Church in Russell, KY, a church he dearly loved. He took an Honor Flight in October of 2016 to Washington D.C. for veterans, built the Russell Carwash formally known as "Rigwell". He was a KY Sports Fan and enjoyed watching his grandson, Drake, play ball.
Mr. Wells is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Nolan Wells; two sons: David Wells of Ironton, OH; Rusty (Debbie) Wells of Russell, KY; two daughters: Jane Wells of Portland, OR; Beth (Mike) Sexton of Ashland, KY; eleven grandchildren: Jason Wells, Josie Wells, Erica Jane Edison, Megan Wells, William N. Wells, Meredith (Lee) Dickens, Kristen Sexton, Tanner Sexton, Drake Wells, Adia Wells, Cash Wells; two great grandchildren: Liam Dickens, Halley Grace Wells; one sister-in-law, Janie Wells, two nephews, Scotty Wells, David D. Wells; one niece, Melanie Wells Martin; one uncle, JR Honaker, and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods, KY. Burial will be at KY Veterans Cemetery NE in Greenup, KY.
Visitation will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. before the service.
