John Earl Harris

John Earl Harris, 81, of Flatwoods, KY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at his residence.

Mr. Harris was born May 19, 1943, in Russell, KY, to the late Earl and Lou Opal Miller Harris.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a son Michael Wayne Harris, and his two brothers: Donald E. and Jack Harris.

John was an inspector for preventive maintenance with the B.O. Department at AK Steel for over twenty-nine years. He was a 1961 graduate of Russell High School in Russell, KY, a Vietnam Army Veteran stationed in Germany, a Kentucky Colonel, and a Councilman for Flatwoods, KY for eight years. John loved traveling with his friends and was an avid outdoorsman. He was constantly working on something. He was a member of England Hill Freewill Baptist Church in Catlettsburg, KY where he was a Sunday School teacher for adult married couples. For eight years, he was heavily involved in the construction of the new church and also worked directly with young people helping them with Drug Rehabilitation.

Mr. Harris is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Lois F. Johnson Harris of Flatwoods, KY; two sons, Todd Alan and John Scott Harris both of Flatwoods, KY; six grandchildren: Paige (Zach) Willmes of Bellevue, KY, Brady (Hope) Harris of Cincinnati, OH, Christian (Michelle) Harris of Flatwoods, KY, Isabella “Izzy” Harris of Florence, KY, Brody Harris of Ashland, KY, and Brooklyn Staten of Ashland, KY; two great-grandchildren, Benton Willmes and Captain Theodore Harris; a sister, Bonita Pemberton of Flatwoods, KY; and a host of extended family and friends.

A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.

John’s final resting place will be at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Northeast in Greenup, KY.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the England Hill Freewill Baptist Church building fund (10201 Mayo Trail Rd, Catlettsburg, KY 41129).

The family has entrusted Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods, KY, with the arrangements.
