Mary Ellen Walters, 69, of Flatwoods, KY peacefully passed at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, KY on July 30, 2017, Surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on Mother's Day, May 9, 1948, in Ashland, KY, a daughter of the late Eugene C. and Lillian Gilley Turley of Flatwoods.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Turley of Greenup.
She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Gary D. Walters; three daughters, Alison Walters Smith and husband Marty of Nicholasville, KY, Erin Walters Hunter of Tampa, FL, and Brooke Walters Hamilton of Lexington, KY; one son, Tyler D. Walters and fiancé Ashley Chin of Chicago, IL. She and Gary were blessed with seven grandchildren: Alex and Lucas Hunter, Grant Hamilton, Dylan, Ainsley, Nicholas, and Finn Smith. She is also survived by a sister, Debby Turley Atkins of Russell and one brother, Brian Dee Turley and wife Connie of Charlotte, NC, along with a host of family and friends that will mourn her passing.
She retired from the Russell Independent School System in 2004. As a teacher for 28 years, she impacted generations of elementary students with her humble, kind, and serving spirit. She was a lifetime member of Advance United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher. She was a member of the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association, as well as the Greenup County Retired Teachers Association. After retirement, her greatest joy was to travel and spend time with her family.
Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Advance United Methodist Church in Flatwoods, KY with Rev. Don Young and Rev. Sean Schroll officiating. Burial will be at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery NE in Greenup, KY.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the church and an hour before the service on Wednesday.
The family has entrusted Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods, KY with the arrangements.
