Opal Marie Church Zornes, 73, of Russell, KY, formerly of Lusby, MD, passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, KY.
Mrs. Zornes was born September 8, 1944 in Pound, VA to the late Watson and Opal Branham Church.
Mrs. Zornes was a retired paralegal for the Department of Justice in Washington, DC as a case worker for the Anti-Trust Division. She moved to Russell, KY in 2002 and enjoyed working in her church at the Wurtland Church of God, going to Bible Study Group at the Flatwoods Senior Citizen Center, and kissing on her granddaughters.
Mrs. Opal and her husband have many fond moments of taking road trips to the Eastern Shore to St. Michaels to enjoying the beach and scenery. They would love to stroll the boardwalks of Solomon’s Island and enjoy a fish sandwich at the local family owned restaurants.
Living near the Patuxent River was a joy to them. They would take their granddaughters for ice cream and watch a sunset. Anytime spent with their grandchildren and family was their most treasured moments; for instance like family dinners and front porch sitting.
Opal was a woman of God. Her heart was as big as this world. She loved her church family. She enjoyed watching the children in the nursery during Sunday services. She always said they were all her children.
Growing up as an only child, she never experienced a big family. She always made her own. Her love of family and the friends that she made family, was something she was very passionate about. She raised her only son to be the same way. Loving, kind, caring, and devoted to family! Opal will be missed more than anything and her memory will live in many hearts forever.
Mrs. Zornes is survived by her loving husband of 28 years, Roy Zornes; one son, Jerry E. (Celeste) Church of Lusby, Maryland; one step daughter, Tammy (Jeff) Mahan of Lexington, KY; two granddaughters: Taylor and Hailey Church; one great grandson, Aiden Church; two step granddaughters, Jessica (Joshua) Miller and Alexis Frisby both of Lexington, KY; one step great grandson, Jaxson Miller; and a host of extended family and friends.
